Local Government elections are held every four years to determine the representatives for the Devonport City Council.
In 2026, elections will be conducted in all 29 of Tasmania’s local government areas. This includes the election of councillors, a mayor and a deputy mayor for each council to serve a four-year term of office.
Local government elections are conducted by postal ballot and voting is compulsory for all electors on the State roll, but not compulsory for those enrolled on the General Manager’s Roll.
Candidate nominations have closed and candidates have been announced by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.

How elections work
Tasmanian local government elections are conducted by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) using a postal ballot. There are no polling places or pre-poll voting centres.
Is voting compulsory?
Yes – Voting is compulsory for all residents on the State Electoral Roll. Failure to vote may result in a fine. Voting remains optional for those enrolled on the General Manager’s Roll (non-resident owners/occupiers).
Voting
- Compulsory for people on the State Electoral Roll
- Not compulsory for those on the General Manager’s Roll
Local Government elections are a full postal ballot which means there is a polling period rather than one polling day. Every elector will be sent their very own postal ballot pack at their postal address.
If you’ll be away from your enrolled address when ballot packs are delivered, you can request a supplementary postal ballot pack now to be sent to another address. Packs cannot be sent before Monday 5 October.
