Kennel Licence Application Form

Under section 50 of the Dog Control Act 2000 you are required to apply for a Kennel Licence if you intend to keep:

  • More than two dogs over the age of six months; or
  • More than four working dogs over the age of six months

How to Apply for a Kennel Licence

To apply for a Kennel Licence you need to complete the following steps:

  1. Place a public notice in The Advocate newspaper stating that you intend to apply for a kennel licence.
    1. You must pay for the notice yourself.
    2. You can use the provided template.
  2. Complete a Kennel Licence Application Form.
  3. Pay the application fee.
    1. After submitting the application form, Council will send you an invoice.

Important Information

  • Council has 28 days from the date the notice is published to assess the application and consider any written objections.
  • If the fee is paid and all requirements are met, the Kennel Licence will be issued.
  • All dogs over six months old must be registered and microchipped before a licence can be issued.
  • You do not have to own all the dogs. If more than two dogs are kept on one property, a licence is still required.

A Kennel Licence:

  • Is issued for a set number of dogs
  • May include conditions
  • Council can cancel a licence if conditions are not followed or if it is in the public interest.
  • Four weeks’ notice will be given.
  • Licences must be renewed every year.
  • Renewals do not need to be advertised unless the number of dogs changes.
  • Invoices are sent out from 1 July each year.
  • A Kennel Licence cannot be transferred to another property.
  • Breeding, training, or boarding dogs is not allowed unless you also have a planning permit.
