Welcome to the Devonport City Council Beach Watch Program, dedicated to providing up-to-date water quality information and ensuring safe swimming experiences at our beautiful swimming beaches: Mersey Bluff Beach, Coles Beach, Back Beach, and East Devonport Beach.
Water Quality Monitoring
Devonport City Council regularly monitors water quality at our beaches during the summer swimming season, from December to March. The program aligns with the Public Health Act 1997 and the Recreational Water Quality Guidelines 2007 to ensure your safety.
Monitoring Details:
- Testing Frequency: Fortnightly sampling.
- What We Test: Levels of enterococci bacteria, a key indicator of water contamination.
- Public Access: Results are shared every 2 weeks via this webpage.

Below is an interactive map displaying the latest test results for each of our monitored beaches. Legend:- Green: Safe for swimming.
- Blue: Caution advised; water is scheduled for retesting.
- Red: Unsafe for swimming.
Beaches are ‘closed where pollution events or water quality poses a risk to public health. Signs are removed once testing results have indicated that the risks have reduced.
Swimming Guidelines
To keep yourself and others safe, please follow these recommendations:
- Avoid swimming for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall, as stormwater runoff can affect water quality.
- Refrain from swimming near stormwater outlets or urban rivulets.
- Always check the latest water quality updates here or on beach signage before swimming.
